Don't Recommend the ACT if YOU Haven't Taken It

There is no denying that we're constantly exposed to too much information. Unless you shut down your TV, laptop, cell phone, and move to the mountains, you need to be highly discretionary. For those of you who still have their web browser open, listen up! When it comes to picking the best test for you, never take advice from someone who hasn't taken both exams in the last year. This is especially true for the SAT and ACT. He or she is borrowing information--that can be reckless and terribly misleading.

Here is one argument I recently heard from a counselor.
"Oh, you're more of ACT person because you work hard in school and get good grades, but tests have never been your strength."
Stop and think about this statement. If you get good grades but struggle with tests, that's a loophole in the grading system. You are avoiding the problem, which probably is a mix of incorrect study habits and flawed testing skills. Perhaps you don't read carefully. Perhaps you do too much work in your head. Perhaps you try to memorize everything. Both the SAT and ACT will not allow you to circumvent these underlying issues.

Please do me a huge favor. The next time someone recommends the SAT over the ACT, or the ACT over the SAT, ask them how they know. Also, find out how they felt when they took both exams (just note there's a good chance they haven't taken these exams in the last decade). I'm not encouraging you to be irreverent. Rather, I'm encouraging you to exercise diligence. Are you really getting the best advice?
