How to Superscore the ACT

If you've taken the ACT multiple times, some schools will take your highest section scores from different test dates.  The problem: each school has its own policy, so finding out which schools Superscore is time consuming.  It will take many hours.  A quick word of advice--call the schools instead of searching through college websites.  It's much faster.  Here is a quick link to a list I found with a Google search.

If you find a school that Superscores the ACT, such as Brown University, you have some work to do--and some money to spend.  ACT, unfortunately, releases only one exam per request.  Therefore, if you plan to send three ACT tests to Brown so it can take your highest section scores, you need to pay for three score reports.  That's $27 according the ACT fee schedule.  If you need to do that for 9 other schools, you've just spent an extra $270 on college applications.

In contrast, College Board, allows you to send all your SAT scores for $9.50.  That's it, no additional fees.  And that list of schools that Superscore the SAT is massive in comparison to schools that Superscore the ACT.

I'm confident that more schools will begin to Superscore the ACT, but for now, the SAT dominates the ACT in Superscore friendliness.  It cost significantly less and more schools honor the policy.  For some students, this may be reason enough to stick with the SAT.

Also, here is a post on finding a list of schools that superscore the ACT.
